Who doesn’t love a bit of drama especially when it’s on the big screen, but even if you don’t have a big screen, you can enjoy the best drama movies at home in front of the television. There are so many fantastic dramas, some dating back to the 1920s and as television has advanced, so have the storylines. Some of them are just so good you almost feel as if you’re the main character and others will have you hanging off the edge of your in suspense. This 2020 movie received an Oscar nomination. It’s the story of a family from South Korea who move to America to realize their dreams. Both heart-warming and tear-jerking it explores the plight of Korean immigrants, the struggles they have in building a home and understanding the new culture and also feeling accepted by American society. It’s rentable on Amazon Prime.
This dark psychological thriller movie first premiered in 2010. It stars Natalie Portman as Nina, and she won an Oscar for her portrayal of the ballet dancer. It’s a story of jealousy and Nina is in competition with another ballet dancer called Lily (played by Mila Kunis) to get the lead in Swan Lake. You can rent this movie on Amazon Prime.
Promising Young Woman
This movie was released in 2020 and is a tale of revenge but unlike most revenge movies, it’s centered around some desperately dark and troubled women. Watch it to see how the drama unfolds but beware, it’s not for the feint hearted.
This adaptation of a book premiered back in 2014 and centers around the main character Amy, played by Rosamund Pike. Amy mysteriously goes missing and while her husband desperately tries to find her, the circumstances don’t quite add up until eventually, Amy’s husband becomes the prime suspect. Watch out for the twist! It’s remarkable. You’ll find this one on Amazon video.
Suitable for all the family, this movie is the adaptation of the famous Louisa M Alcott book and is about the March sisters. It’s a superb portrayal of the sisters’ lives and is a heart-breaking tale too. The casting is fantastic, with Saoirse Ronan playing the lively Jo and Florence Pugh playing Amy. This is one for all the family to watch together.
The Florida Project
This 2017 movie is one of the best drama movies although it is in indie style. It is the story of American life and American culture. It follows six-year-old Moonee and her mother who live in the Magic Castle motel, located near Disney World. It packs a punch with plenty of drama and you can stream this movie on Netflix.
This 1999 movie involves women staying at a mental institution during the 60s. It’s also based on a 1993 memoir by Susanna Kaysen. With an all-star cast (Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, and Brittany Murphy) it even earned Leto an Academy Award as the best supporting actress. Judas and the Black Messiah
A more recent movie, released in 2021 and one that you can stream on HBO Max, this movie is a biopic about the life of Fred Hampton. He was the chairperson of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party who was hunted down and murdered by the FBI.
Call Me by Your Name
This is one of the best drama movies ever and was first released in 2017. It is a tale of first love, when a handsome graduate student comes to stay with Elio and his family for the summer. As well as a sad, poignant love story, there’s an abundance of beautiful Italian countryside to admire. This movie can be rented on Amazon Prime.
This Chinese movie is subtitled, it was first aired in 2019 and follows the story of American Chinese girl Billi who returns to China with her family to say goodbye to her dying grandmother. The grandmother doesn’t know that she’s dying, she doesn’t even realize that she’s unwell because none of the family want to tell her. Expect more than a few tears.
